076/19 News Release - Safety Tips Regarding Buying and Selling Items Online
November 25, 2019

CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department would like to offer safety tips to the public regarding buying and selling items online such as on Craigslist, Offer Up, and Facebook Marketplace.

With the holiday season upon us, we anticipate that there will be an influx of people selling items online to make money.  There will also be people browsing online looking for a good deal.  Here are some safety tips to protect yourself from becoming a victim.

Do your research on the item that you’re purchasing.  What does it typically cost? Ask the seller if they have any receipts or warranty information.  Be wary of items that could possibly be stolen.

Do not meet at your residence.  Meet during daylight hours in a public place. Utilize the buddy system and have a friend or family member go with you.

For expensive items, consider having the transaction done at the bank instead of carrying large amounts of cash with you.

If something about the transaction bothers you, trust your gut.  If it is too good to be true, more than likely it is.
